Tata Motors Aims to Conquer Midsize SUV Market with Curvv Launch

Tata Motors is set to announce the pricing for its new Curvv SUV, with the electric variant launching on August 7 and the petrol and diesel models to follow. This new coupe-SUV aims to fill a gap in Tata’s lineup, positioned to compete in the midsize SUV segment alongside the popular Tata Nexon and Harrier. The Curvv is designed to challenge the Hyundai Creta and will come equipped with several standout features, including a segment-first.

Innovative Features of Tata Curvv

The Curvv and its all-electric counterpart will feature 18-inch alloy wheels, larger than the typical 17-inch ones used by competitors, and flush door handles with puddle lamps. It boasts a 500-litre boot with a powered tailgate and gesture control, making it a first-in-segment feature.

Inside, the top-tier Curvv models will offer a glass roof extending to the C-pillar, with the front section operable via voice control and the rear section equipped with “natural light control” to adjust brightness. Other interior features include leatherette upholstery, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, six-way adjustable and ventilated front seats, a two-step rear seat recline function, and 45W Type-C charging ports both front and rear. A digital instrument cluster and wireless charging are also expected, along with Tata’s iRA connected car technology, which in the Curvv EV will exceed the 55 features available in the standard model.

Safety and Technology

For safety, the Curvv will include front and rear disc brakes, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, ESP, a driver drowsiness alert system, and Level 2 ADAS features. It is also expected to come with six airbags. The design incorporates elements from the larger Harrier, such as the four-spoke steering wheel and large touchscreen, integrated into a redesigned Nexon dashboard.

Powertrain Options

The Curvv will be available with petrol, diesel, and electric powertrain options. There will be two turbo-petrol engines: a 120hp, 1.2-litre and a 125hp, 1.2-litre direct-injection unit, as well as a 115hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine. Automatic variants will include paddle shifters. Details about the Curvv EV’s battery specifications are not yet available, but it is anticipated to achieve a range of approximately 450-500 km on a single charge.

Market Positioning and Competition

With its extensive features, diverse powertrain options, and distinctive coupe-SUV design, the Tata Curvv is positioned to compete against models like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, and the forthcoming Citroen Basalt. The Curvv EV will also stand out as one of the few all-electric midsize SUVs on the market, alongside the MG ZS EV and the base Dynamic variant of the BYD Atto 3. The segment will soon expand with the introduction of the Hyundai Creta EV in January 2025, followed by the Maruti eVX and its Toyota counterpart, the Urban SUV concept, later next year.

With the Curvv, Tata Motors is looking to secure an early advantage in the midsize SUV segment, leveraging its innovative features and broad powertrain options to attract a wide range of consumers.
