In a significant achievement for Indian automobile manufacturer Tata Motors, their twin SUVs – the Harrier and the Safari – have clinched the highest 5-star rating for adult and child occupant safety in the most recent assessment conducted by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) as part of the Safer Cars for India campaign. This remarkable achievement reaffirms Tata’s commitment to producing safer vehicles, providing a boost to the automotive industry in India.
Tata’s Commitment to Safety
Tata Motors voluntarily offered the Harrier and Safari for testing by the Global NCAP, emphasizing their dedication to ensuring vehicle safety. These tests were conducted in accordance with the 2022 assessment protocols, covering frontal and side impact protection, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), pedestrian protection, and side impact pole protection assessments. Both models come equipped with six airbags and ESC as standard, contributing to their stellar safety ratings.
Global NCAP’s assessments revealed that both the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier showcased robust restraint systems and a stable structure, ensuring superior protection for adult and child occupants. These models also excelled in safeguarding child occupants during dynamic tests, thanks to features like ISOFIX anchorages and a passenger airbag disabling switch, enhancing their child-friendliness.
Furthermore, the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier meet the requirements of UN127 and GTR9 for pedestrian protection as standard. They also comply with Global NCAP’s ESC requirements and feature seatbelt reminders in all seating positions, along with optional Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technologies, promoting comprehensive safety.
Alejandro Furas, the Global NCAP Secretary General, lauded Tata Motors for their outstanding results, emphasizing the manufacturer’s commitment to producing safer vehicles. David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation, expressed optimism about the safety trend in the Indian automotive industry, as Global NCAP’s testing transitions to the work of Bharat NCAP.
Safer Cars for India Campaign
The Safer Cars for India campaign by Global NCAP, initiated in 2014, aims to promote safer vehicles in India. This campaign complements India’s revised mandatory safety regulations and encourages a higher standard of safety in cars available in the Indian market. With the latest tests, the campaign has conducted a total of 65 crash tests, further enhancing safety standards in the Indian automotive industry.
Tata’s Legacy of Safety
Notably, Tata Motors has now had 11 of its models tested by Global NCAP. Several Tata vehicles, including the Nexon, Altroz, and Punch, have previously earned 5-star ratings, underscoring the brand’s commitment to vehicle safety. These achievements reflect a positive shift in the Indian automotive industry, as safety becomes a paramount concern.
It is worth mentioning that Tata’s journey in the Safer Cars for India campaign had a humble beginning, with the Nano, one of the first cars tested, receiving a zero-star rating. The subsequent evolution and enhancement of Tata’s vehicle safety standards signify significant progress.
Global NCAP, operating under the Towards Zero Foundation, aims to support the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, striving to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 2030, emphasizing the importance of vehicle safety as a key element in achieving this goal.
Tata Motors’ Harrier and Safari’s latest 5-star safety ratings reflect a promising trajectory for safety in the Indian automotive industry, emphasizing the need for stringent safety standards and the continued dedication of manufacturers like Tata to deliver safer vehicles to the Indian market. As the Bharat NCAP tests are set to commence soon, this achievement underscores a bright future for vehicle safety in India.
