Skoda Kylaq Launched in India: Compact SUV Priced at Rs 7.89 Lakh

Skoda Kylaq Launched in India

Skoda India has unveiled its latest addition to the compact SUV segment: the Skoda Kylaq, starting at an attractive Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom). With this model, Skoda aims to expand its reach in India, targeting an ambitious 100,000 unit sales annually. Following the success of the Kushaq and Slavia models from the India 2.0 program—which led to 53,721 units sold in 2022—the Kylaq aims to attract a broader audience in the competitive SUV market.

What’s Behind the Name “Kylaq”?

Chosen from over 200,000 entries in a national naming contest, the name “Kylaq” holds deep symbolism. It references Mount Kailash and translates to “crystal” in Sanskrit, reflecting both the Czech Republic’s heritage in crystal craftsmanship and Skoda’s existing SUV naming conventions (like Kushaq, Karoq, and Kodiaq). The Kylaq’s styling makes it immediately recognizable as part of the Skoda family.

Modern Design with Distinctive Styling

The Kylaq embodies Skoda’s latest “Modern Solid” design language, sporting clean lines and a distinctive front fascia similar to the Kushaq’s. Key elements include a split headlamp setup with LED daytime running lights above and LED projector headlights below. The redesigned, slimmer Skoda grille, combined with prominent bonnet creases and two-tone bumper cladding, gives the Kylaq a bold and muscular look.

From a side view, the Kylaq has an 85mm shorter wheelbase (measuring 2,566mm) and a total length of 3,995mm—230mm shorter than the Kushaq. Despite its compact size, the Kylaq maintains a balanced, robust profile and stands out in the segment for its generous 189mm ground clearance.

Interior Features and Comfort

Inside, the Kylaq’s cabin design is closely aligned with that of the Kushaq. It includes Skoda’s familiar dashboard layout, two-spoke steering wheel, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-inch touchscreen with an updated operating system. The Kylaq offers a premium feature set, including a sunroof, wireless charging, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, ventilated front seats, and powered seat adjustment for both driver and front passenger.

Rear passengers benefit from comfortable seating with adequate kneeroom, a fold-down center armrest, and adjustable headrests for all seats. The Kylaq’s boot is spacious too, with a total luggage capacity of 446 liters (or 360 liters with the parcel shelf in place).

Safety Features and Build Quality

The Kylaq is based on the MQB-A0 IN platform shared with the Kushaq, Slavia, Volkswagen Taigun, and Virtus. Though it hasn’t yet been tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, Skoda is aiming for a 5-star safety rating. Standard safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, an electronic differential lock, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Performance and Driving Experience

The Kylaq comes with a 1.0 TSI petrol engine, delivering 115hp and 178Nm of torque. Available with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox, this engine promises engaging performance, with Skoda claiming a 0-100 kph time of 10.5 seconds. While fuel economy figures are yet to be confirmed, the Kylaq’s weight reduction (38kg lighter than the Kushaq) and refined suspension tuning hint at a more comfortable and efficient drive.

Competitive Pricing and Rivals

With a starting price of Rs 7.89 lakh, the Kylaq enters a highly competitive compact SUV market, facing rivals such as the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3OO, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. Supported by an expanding sales and service network across India, the Kylaq is well-positioned to make a significant impact in this segment.

Overall, Skoda’s new compact SUV brings premium features, solid build quality, and an appealing price point to one of India’s fastest-growing automotive segments, setting it up as a strong contender in the compact SUV market.
