Scooter Sales Hit Historic High in October as GST 2.0 Fuels Demand Surge

India’s two-wheeler industry delivered a standout performance this October, with scooters emerging as the star performers. OEMs dispatched 8.24 lakh scooters to dealerships—an all-time monthly record and the second consecutive month of unprecedented volumes after a strong September.

A combination of revised GST 2.0 benefits, improved liquidity in rural markets, and renewed consumer confidence has significantly boosted demand across the scooter segment. Dealers report that rural buyers, in particular, are increasingly opting for scooters, turning the category into a major growth driver.

Scooters Offset Dip in Motorcycle Volumes

While motorcycle dispatches registered a mild year-on-year decline, scooters have filled the void convincingly. The segment now commands 37% of overall two-wheeler shipments, driven by both traditional petrol models and a fast-rising fleet of electric scooters. EVs have become impossible to ignore, contributing a meaningful chunk to the monthly totals.

Honda Leads; TVS Rides EV Strength

Honda retained its leadership position with a strong showing from the Activa and Dio range, dispatching nearly 3.63 lakh units and securing a 44% share of the scooter market in October. Although this marks Honda’s best month this year, it remains shy of the company’s peak volumes achieved in 2017.

TVS secured a solid second place with over 2.02 lakh units, bolstered by continued traction for the Jupiter, Ntorq, and the rapidly growing iQube EV. Suzuki was the only other brand to cross the one-lakh mark, largely on the back of the robust performance of the Access.

Hero MotoCorp posted notable gains as its Vida V2 and VX2 EVs scaled up, while Ather Energy enjoyed another strong month driven by rising interest in the Rizta. Bajaj maintained steady dispatches with the Chetak and its Yulu partnership, and Yamaha recorded marginal declines in its 125cc scooter lineup.

Seven-Month Trend Signals Rise of EVs and Premium 125cc Scooters

From April to October 2025, Honda continued as the top scooter manufacturer, though it ceded some share compared to last year. TVS, with its expanded electric and petrol portfolio—now including the new Orbiter—improved its market share to 28%. Suzuki held firm at 15%, while Hero continued to climb on the strength of its growing electric lineup. Meanwhile, Ather’s momentum has elevated its share to the 3% range.

The broader market view underscores a major shift in consumer preferences. Shoppers are increasingly gravitating towards 125cc scooters for their performance and features, while EV scooters are rapidly transitioning from niche to mainstream.

As GST 2.0 makes scooters more financially accessible and manufacturers broaden their offerings, the segment appears poised for sustained growth in the coming months.
