Nissan Motor India has introduced a retrofit CNG kit for the Nissan Gravite, priced at an introductory ₹82,999. The kit is available as an add-on across authorised dealerships, offering a more economical fuel option for buyers of the popular budget MPV.
The Gravite itself is currently priced between ₹5.65 lakh and ₹8.94 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most accessible 7-seater options in India—and now, even more cost-effective to run.
What’s New with the Nissan Gravite CNG Kit?
The biggest highlight of this update is the addition of a dealer-installed CNG system, designed to balance affordability with usability.
- Twin CNG cylinders (25 litres each) placed vertically in the boot
- ICAT-approved system for safety and compliance
- Developed and quality-checked by Motozen
- 3-year / 1,00,000km third-party warranty on kit components
- Available in 60 cities across 16 states
While the setup improves fuel economy, it does come with a trade-off:
👉 Boot space is completely occupied by the CNG tanks
That said, the Gravite continues to offer its full 7-seat configuration, which remains a strong selling point in this segment.
Engine & Performance
The Gravite continues with its existing petrol engine, now adapted for CNG compatibility:
- 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine
- 72hp and 96Nm (petrol mode)
- Transmission options:
- 5-speed manual
- AMT
The CNG kit is expected to be offered primarily with manual variants, although Nissan has not officially disclosed performance figures or mileage in CNG mode yet.
A practical addition is the dedicated CNG filling nozzle placed under the fuel lid, improving ease of use compared to external setups.
Practicality: The Big Trade-Off
- No usable boot space remains
- Long-distance travel with luggage becomes challenging
However, for buyers primarily using the car within city limits or for people movement (like fleet or shared mobility), this compromise may be acceptable.
Gravite CNG vs Triber CNG: What’s Different?
It’s important not to confuse this setup with the upcoming Renault Triber CNG version.
- Gravite CNG (current launch)
- Retrofit kit
- Cylinders placed in boot
- No structural changes
- Triber CNG (upcoming factory version)
- Expected underbody-mounted twin cylinders
- Requires platform re-engineering
- Better luggage space retention
Interestingly, Renault had earlier offered a retrofit CNG kit for the Triber, similar in concept to what Nissan is now offering with the Gravite.
Should You Consider It?
The Nissan Gravite CNG makes sense if your priorities are:
✔ Lower running costs
✔ Affordable 7-seater ownership
✔ City or fleet usage
But it may not suit you if you need:
✖ Regular luggage space
✖ Highway touring practicality
Final Take
With rising fuel prices, Nissan’s move to introduce a dealer-level CNG retrofit adds real-world value to the Gravite. While it’s not as sophisticated as factory-fitted solutions, it keeps costs low and accessibility high—key factors for buyers in the entry MPV segment.
If your usage leans toward daily commuting or commercial purposes, this upgrade could significantly reduce running expenses without changing the core appeal of the Gravite.
