Despite the growing dominance of petrol-powered models, diesel compact SUVs remain a compelling choice for buyers seeking a balance of power and efficiency. Currently, six diesel-powered options are available in this segment: Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Mahindra Thar RWD, Mahindra Bolero Neo, and Kia Sonet. Kia is also set to introduce the Syros on February 1, further expanding the lineup.
While some of these models are offered exclusively with a manual transmission, others provide automatic variants, including AMT and torque converter options. The following ranking is based on ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures, with the highest-rated version of each SUV considered.
7. Mahindra Thar RWD – 15.2 km/l
The Mahindra Thar RWD, featuring a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 119 hp and 300 Nm of torque, is the least fuel-efficient among the group. Available only with a 6-speed manual gearbox, it delivers 15.2 km/l. Prices for this off-road-oriented SUV range from ₹11.49 lakh to ₹12.99 lakh.
6. Mahindra Bolero Neo – 18.04 km/l
An evolution of the TUV300, the Mahindra Bolero Neo stands out as one of the only ladder-frame compact SUVs with rear-wheel drive. Powered by a 100 hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, it returns a mileage of 18.04 km/l. The 7-seater, priced between ₹9.95 lakh and ₹12.15 lakh, earned a 1-star Global NCAP safety rating.
5. Kia Syros – 20.75 km/l
Kia’s upcoming Syros will officially launch on February 1, but its efficiency figures are already known. Powered by a 116 hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine, it delivers 20.75 km/l with the manual gearbox and 17.65 km/l with the 6-speed torque converter automatic. Dealers report strong demand for higher trims featuring segment-first cooled rear seats.
4. Mahindra XUV 3XO – 21.2 km/l
The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a more premium alternative to the Bolero Neo, featuring a 117 hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine. It is available with both manual (20.6 km/l) and AMT (21.2 km/l) transmissions. With prices ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹14.49 lakh, Mahindra is also planning a hybrid variant for 2026.
3. Kia Sonet – 22.3 km/l
Sharing its diesel engine with the Syros, the Kia Sonet achieves slightly better efficiency, with 22.3 km/l for the manual variant and 18.6 km/l for the automatic. Priced between ₹10 lakh and ₹13.34 lakh, the Sonet recently dropped its iMT option in a variant reshuffle.
2. Hyundai Venue – 23.7 km/l
Equipped with the same 1.5-litre diesel engine as its Kia counterparts, the Hyundai Venue stands out for its superior fuel efficiency, delivering 23.7 km/l with its manual transmission. Priced between ₹10.80 lakh and ₹13.53 lakh, the Venue is set for an update later this year but will retain its current diesel powertrain.
