MG Motor India is preparing to unveil its premium retail network, MG Select, with plans to launch the Mifa 9 luxury electric MPV right after the debut of its new Cyberster roadster, the first vehicle available through this exclusive channel. The Mifa 9, which was initially showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, will be reintroduced at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025, with its commercial release scheduled for March. The MPV is expected to carry a price tag around Rs 65 lakh.
Though luxury MPVs are still a niche, MG sees the Mifa 9 as aligning well with MG Select’s strategy to promote New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) that cater to the “new-age luxury” market. Initially, the brand aims to target only 12 major Indian cities, making a high-end offering like the Mifa 9 an ideal addition. The luxury MPV segment itself has shown considerable potential, with Toyota’s Vellfire averaging sales of 100 units monthly and Kia amassing 3,000 orders for its Carnival. This demand hints at a promising market for the Mifa 9.
While production specifics remain under wraps, industry insiders suggest the Mifa 9 will likely be assembled locally in India. Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, recently hinted at the likelihood of local assembly even for high-end models in the MG Select lineup.
Globally, MG’s parent company, SAIC, markets the Mifa 9 under different brands: Maxus in China and the UK, LDV in Australia, and as MG in regions like Singapore and the Philippines. The all-electric Mifa 9 was first introduced in 2021, followed by an internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, the G90, with options for a 2.0-liter petrol or diesel engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. However, given MG’s emphasis on electric vehicles and strong hybrids, the G90 is unlikely to be launched in India.
The electric Mifa 9, like the G90, employs a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with a 90kWh lithium battery that delivers 245hp and 350Nm of torque. It boasts an impressive WLTP range of approximately 430km. Measuring 5.2 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height, the Mifa 9 surpasses the dimensions of both the Kia Carnival and Toyota Vellfire, making it one of the largest MPVs in its class. Inside, the Mifa 9 offers generous space with 7- and 8-seater configurations. The MPV is well-appointed, featuring amenities like heated, ventilated, and massaging front and rear seats, fold-out ottomans, powered rear-sliding doors, dual sunroofs, and rear entertainment screens.
Design-wise, the Mifa 9 adopts a modern look despite its boxy MPV shape, with a tall front fascia, a full-width LED light bar, and U-shaped chrome garnish around the headlamps. The profile features chrome accents along the windows and sills, while the rear showcases vertical tail lamps connected by a light bar and chrome detailing.
The Mifa 9 is a pivotal model for MG, testing both the brand’s pricing flexibility and Indian buyers’ willingness to invest in a high-end MG MPV. Complementing the Mifa 9, the sporty Cyberster roadster—a premium electric convertible—will also arrive under MG Select. The contrast between the Mifa 9 and Cyberster reflects MG’s ambition to offer a diverse luxury portfolio, underlining the brand’s commitment to premium electric mobility in India.
