Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to unveil the all-electric GLC EV later this year at the Munich Motor Show, positioning it as an indirect successor to the EQC SUV. Marking a strategic shift, the GLC EV will be sold alongside its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart rather than as a standalone electric model. This move aligns with Mercedes’ new approach of integrating EVs within its existing lineup rather than creating distinct electric-only models.
GLC EV Powertrain, Range & Platform
The GLC EV will debut Mercedes’ all-new MB.EA platform, which will also underpin future models like the electric C-Class and a compact G-Class, both set to arrive in 2026. Additionally, it will introduce the eATS 2.0 drivetrain, first showcased in the Vision EQXX concept.
Two powertrain configurations will be available:
- A single-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant producing 272hp
- A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) version generating 490hp
Powering both variants is a 94.5kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, offering an estimated 650km range on a single charge. The 800V electrical architecture enables ultra-fast charging at speeds of up to 320kW, allowing the SUV to gain approximately 260km of range in just 10 minutes.
Advanced Technology & Efficiency Enhancements
Mercedes has equipped the GLC EV with cutting-edge technology to improve efficiency and performance.
- New Heat Pump: A more compact and effective heat pump enhances energy efficiency while also freeing up space for a larger frunk (front trunk).
- Regenerative Braking System: Unlike conventional braking setups, the GLC EV features a computer-controlled brake energy recuperation system that decouples the brake pedal from the mechanical braking mechanism. This setup optimizes the balance between regenerative and disc braking, providing a more natural braking feel while ensuring a reliable fallback to hydraulic braking in case of an issue.
A Shift in Mercedes’ EV Strategy
Under CEO Ola Källenius, Mercedes is moving away from designing standalone EV models with distinct branding. Instead, future EVs will share more similarities with their ICE counterparts to streamline production and reduce costs. The upcoming next-gen CLA will also follow this approach.
The GLC EV is set to compete with rivals such as the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX3, and Porsche Macan Electric in global markets. Production will take place in Bremen, Germany, and Beijing, China, with potential expansion to Tuscaloosa, USA.
India Launch Plans
While Mercedes has not confirmed an India launch for the GLC EV, the brand has lined up at least four new models for the Indian market this year. The current-gen GLC, available in mild-hybrid petrol and diesel variants, has been on sale in India since 2023, with the performance-focused AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe joining the lineup in August 2023.
