Mercedes-Benz has introduced the EQS SUV to the Indian market at an introductory price of ₹1.41 crore, following closely behind the launch of the Maybach EQS SUV. This marks the sixth electric vehicle (EV) in Mercedes’ Indian lineup, positioned between the EQE SUV and the ultra-luxurious Maybach EQS SUV. Notably, the EQS SUV will be locally assembled in India, much like the EQS sedan, making India the first market outside the USA to produce the EQE SUV.
Exterior Design
The EQS SUV features a bold and futuristic design with a black panel grille that flows into the lower front bumper, flanked by sleek LED headlamps connected by a light bar across the front. Compared to the Maybach EQS SUV, the standard EQS sports a more restrained look, with less chrome detailing.
At the rear, the EQS SUV carries a similar design language to the Maybach variant, including full-width LED tail lamps. However, the rear bumper has been reworked with reduced chrome accents. In terms of dimensions, the EQS SUV is slightly more compact than the Mercedes GLS, being 82mm shorter, 3mm wider, and 105mm lower.
Interior and Features
The EQS 580 4Matic variant comes fully loaded with cutting-edge tech and premium features. The standout feature is the massive Hyperscreen display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch central infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger.
Other notable features include:
- Soft-close doors
- Puddle lamps
- Illuminated running boards
- 15-speaker Burmester sound system
- Five-zone climate control
- Dual 11.6-inch rear entertainment screens
- Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
- 9 airbags
- Standard 7-seat configuration
Mercedes is also offering the SUV with the AMG Line styling package, adding sportier bumpers and 21-inch alloy wheels for a more dynamic appearance.
Powertrain, Performance, and Range
The EQS SUV is powered by a 122kWh battery paired with a dual electric motor setup, delivering a combined output of 544hp and 858Nm of torque. The all-wheel-drive SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The India-spec EQS 580 4Matic boasts an impressive ARAI-certified range of 809km on a single charge. It also supports up to 200kW DC fast charging, ensuring quick and convenient recharges.
Competition and Pricing
At ₹1.41 crore, the EQS SUV is priced just ₹2 lakh higher than its sibling, the EQE SUV (₹1.39 crore). In the luxury EV segment, the EQS SUV will compete against rivals like the BMW iX (₹1.4 crore) and Audi Q8 e-tron (₹1.15 crore to ₹1.27 crore).
Mercedes has already seen success with its EV offerings in India, having received over 50 bookings for the Maybach EQS launched earlier this month. The EQS sedan has also proven popular, with over 500 units sold in the country so far.
