Mercedes-Benz India has unveiled the facelifted version of the GLE Coupe, starting at Rs 1.85 crore before options, with prices potentially reaching Rs 2.25 crore with added features. This SUV-coupe variant of the GLE is exclusively available in AMG 53 form. The second-generation GLE Coupe initially arrived in India in 2020 but was silently discontinued before the introduction of the GLE facelift to the Indian market. Concurrently, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the GLA facelift, starting at Rs 50.50 lakh.
What’s New in the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe
The facelift retains the mechanical specifications of its predecessor, featuring a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering power to all four wheels with 435hp and 560Nm torque via a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic AWD system. However, a new 48V mild-hybrid system has been integrated, adding 20hp and 200Nm when necessary. This enhancement reduces the 0-100kph sprint time by 0.3 seconds to 5 seconds, while the top speed remains limited to 250kph.
Visually, the GLE 53 Coupe facelift bears resemblance to its predecessor, but closer inspection reveals redesigned headlights and tail-lights, as well as subtle tweaks to the front bumper. Interior updates include a new part-leather, part-Alcantara steering wheel. Notable features include a customisable head-up display, additional control buttons on the steering wheel, and heated and ventilated lumbar-supported front seats. Optional extras encompass the AMG Track Pace software, Acoustic Comfort Package, and AMG’s high-performance braking system. Standard safety features comprise nine airbags, blind spot assist, 360-degree cameras, and a ‘transparent bonnet’.
At present, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe faces no direct competitors in the market, with the closest contender being Porsche’s Cayenne Coupe, priced at Rs 1.42 crore, equipped with a 353hp, 3.0-litre V6 turbo-petrol engine.
Mercedes-Benz EQG Concept in India
Mercedes-Benz India has introduced its all-electric Concept EQG to the country for the first time, confirming the arrival of the production-spec model later in the year. The EQG concept maintains the iconic boxy appearance of the original model but incorporates design changes aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s new EQ range of all-electric vehicles. These adjustments also enhance aerodynamics, crucial for an EV’s range.
The EQG concept features four individually controllable wheel-mounted motors and a 2-speed gearbox offering low-range and high-range gearing. Mercedes-Benz suggests that this quad-motor powertrain will carry over to the production model. The battery integration into the ladder-frame ensures a low centre of gravity. The EQG is anticipated to surpass the current V8-powered AMG G63’s 0-100kph timing of 4.5 seconds, making it the most powerful and fastest G-Class upon series production.
Additionally, the all-electric G-Class will introduce a unique G-Turn function, activated by a dashboard-mounted button, allowing the vehicle to perform an on-the-spot 360-degree tank turn. The driver can choose the direction via paddleshifters on the steering wheel.
