Maruti Suzuki has officially launched the Swift CNG, with prices starting at Rs 8.20 lakh (ex-showroom). This comes four months after the introduction of the petrol variant. The Swift CNG is available in three trims—VXi, VXi (O), and ZXi—marking Maruti’s fourteenth CNG model for the Indian market.
Pricing and Variants
The Swift CNG commands a premium of Rs 90,000 over its petrol counterpart. Below is the full price list for the new Swift CNG:
- VXi: Rs 8.20 lakh
- VXi (O): Rs 8.47 lakh
- ZXi: Rs 9.20 lakh
New Z-Series Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Swift CNG features the new Z12E petrol engine adapted for CNG use. It boasts an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 32.85 km/kg, which is a 6% improvement over the outgoing model powered by the 1.2-litre K-series engine. All CNG variants are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission.
In terms of power, the CNG engine produces 69.75 hp and 101.8 Nm of torque. While the new model’s power output is slightly reduced from the previous generation’s 77 hp, it compensates with marginally higher torque. The CNG tank configuration remains a single large cylinder in the boot, unlike the twin-cylinder setup seen in some newer Hyundai and Tata models. Maruti also claims a 6% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the previous Swift CNG.
Features Across Variants
The entry-level VXi trim includes six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), remote central locking, halogen projector headlamps, 14-inch steel wheels, and power windows. The mid-level VXi (O) trim adds a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and steering-mounted controls.
For the first time, the top-spec ZXi trim gets a CNG variant, loaded with features such as LED projector headlamps with DRLs, 15-inch alloy wheels, wireless charging, automatic climate control, and a rear washer wiper. This well-equipped variant was introduced in response to customer demand for a factory-fitted CNG hatchback with comprehensive features.
Market Outlook and Sales
Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the CNG car market in India, targeting annual sales of six lakh CNG-powered passenger cars and SUVs. Last year, the brand sold approximately 4.77 lakh CNG vehicles, and from April to August 2024 alone, Maruti sold 2.21 lakh CNG cars and SUVs.
With the new Swift CNG, Maruti anticipates a rise in demand, driven by its improved fuel efficiency and expanded price range. The previous-generation Swift saw 15% of its sales coming from CNG variants. Deliveries of the new Swift CNG will begin this weekend in Gujarat, followed by a phased rollout in other states. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are the top markets for Maruti’s CNG models, followed by Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.
Maruti Suzuki’s latest offering in the Swift lineup emphasizes enhanced efficiency, broader features, and an accessible entry point for CNG enthusiasts, catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly and cost-effective mobility solutions in India.
