Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, the e Vitara, has faced another delay, with Chairman R.C. Bhargava confirming that customer deliveries will now commence towards the end of September. Initially unveiled at the Auto Expo 2025, the e Vitara was originally slated for launch in March 2025. This latest update marks a delay of nearly six months.
Why Has the Maruti e Vitara Launch Been Postponed?
This is not the first delay for the e Vitara. Earlier, its production had been pushed back by about five months due to challenges related to battery supply and software development. As previously reported, these hurdles forced Maruti to move the start of production from September 2024 to February 2025.
However, the company has yet to issue an official statement regarding the reasons behind this second delay. The postponement is also expected to impact the launch timeline for Toyota’s counterpart, the Urban Cruiser EV, which shares the same platform as the e Vitara.
Production and Export Plans
Maruti plans to manufacture around 70,000 units of the e Vitara this year, according to Bhargava. However, a significant portion of this production will be allocated for exports.
The e Vitara will be built at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, and during its debut at the Auto Expo, Maruti had indicated that 50 percent of the production would be earmarked for international markets, including Japan and Europe. Current indications suggest that an even larger share will now be exported, with a relatively smaller volume reserved for the domestic market.
Estimated Pricing and Competition
The Maruti e Vitara is expected to carry an on-road price ranging between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. It will enter a competitive segment, taking on rivals such as:
-
Hyundai Creta Electric (Rs 17.99 lakh–24.38 lakh)
-
Mahindra BE 6^ (Rs 18.90 lakh–26.90 lakh*)
-
Tata Curvv EV (Rs 17.49 lakh–22.24 lakh*)
-
MG ZS EV (Rs 18.98 lakh–26.64 lakh*)
The e Vitara will be offered with 49kWh and 61kWh battery pack options. While international versions are expected to offer an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) configuration, this feature is unlikely to be available in the India-spec model.
