Mahindra Confirms Delayed Unveiling of 5-Door Thar

Following reports, Mahindra, the renowned carmaker, has officially announced the delay of the global unveiling of the highly anticipated 5-door Mahindra Thar. Set for a launch in 2024, the company deemed it premature to showcase the model in August.

Instead, Mahindra has scheduled an event on August 15, the exact details of which remain undisclosed. Speculations suggest that this event will likely showcase near-production versions of their upcoming electric SUVs. Mahindra plans to introduce its fresh line of EVs starting from 2025, commencing with the XUV e8, the electric variant of the XUV700.

Design and Features

Based on the latest spy shots, the 5-door Thar appears to be nearing production readiness. It retains the same design language as its three-door counterpart, both inside and out, with the notable addition of two extra doors. Noteworthy features expected in the 5-door Thar include a full metal hard top and an electric sunroof. The SUV is anticipated to offer a 7-inch touchscreen system, cruise control, auto AC, six airbags, and a rear camera.

Powertrain and Drivetrain

The more practical 5-door Thar is expected to be powered by the same 2-liter turbo-petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines found in the 3-door Thar, potentially in a higher state of tune. Mahindra is likely to offer both 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions for both engine options. Similar to the 3-door variant, the 5-door Thar is expected to be available with rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options.

Price and Positioning

Priced at an estimated starting point of around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), the 5-door Thar will position itself as a larger and more premium alternative to the Maruti Jimny. With its enhanced practicality and additional features, the 5-door Thar aims to cater to customers seeking a versatile and capable SUV.

Conclusion

While the global unveiling of the 5-door Mahindra Thar has been postponed, Mahindra enthusiasts can look forward to the upcoming event on August 15, where the carmaker is expected to showcase closer-to-production versions of its upcoming electric SUVs. With its distinctive design, advanced features, and proven powertrain options, the 5-door Thar is set to make a significant impact in the SUV market upon its launch in 2024.
