Kia India Sales Decline By 19% In June 2023

Kia India experienced a combination of positive and negative sales trends in June 2023. While the company recorded a 19 percent year-on-year (YoY) de-growth, it saw a 3 percent month-on-month (MoM) improvement in sales. The Kia Carens and Sonet emerged as the top-selling models, contributing significantly to the total sales.

However, the sales of the Seltos witnessed a notable decline. Kia India has announced plans to launch updated versions of the Seltos and Sonet to stimulate sales.

1. Overall Sales Performance

Kia India’s sales in June 2023 reached 19,391 units, representing a 19 percent YoY de-growth compared to June 2022. Despite the YoY decline, there was a 3 percent MoM growth from May 2023, when the company sold 18,766 units.

2. Best-Selling Model: Kia Carens

The Kia Carens took the lead as the best-selling model in the lineup, with 8,047 units sold in June 2023. This figure indicated a 2 percent YoY growth compared to June 2022. Furthermore, the Carens experienced a significant MoM sales improvement of 26 percent from May 2023, where it sold 6,367 units. Notably, the Carens faced a recall due to software issues, affecting 30,297 units produced between September 2022 and February 2023.

3. Second Best-Selling Model: Kia Sonet

Securing the second position in terms of sales, the Kia Sonet achieved 7,722 units sold in June 2023. This marked a 4 percent YoY increase from June 2022. However, there was a 6 percent decline in MoM sales compared to May 2023. To rejuvenate the model, Kia India is currently testing a facelift version of the Sonet, which is expected to be launched soon.

4. Declining Sales: Kia Seltos

Sales of the Kia Seltos witnessed a significant decline in June 2023. Only 3,578 units were sold, reflecting a 57 percent YoY decrease compared to June 2022. Additionally, MoM sales for the Seltos experienced a 12 percent de-growth compared to May 2023, when the company sold 4,065 units. To address this slump, Kia India has announced the upcoming launch of a new version of the Seltos, with bookings set to open on July 14.

5. Impressive Growth: Kia EV6

In contrast to the Seltos, the Kia EV6 achieved remarkable YoY growth. Sales of the EV6 increased by a staggering 4300 percent, reaching 44 units in June 2023, compared to just 1 unit sold in June 2022. However, MoM sales declined by 47 percent from May 2023, where 83 units were sold.

6. Future Launches

Kia India has planned new launches to revive sales. The 2023 Seltos facelift, which has already been unveiled, will introduce additional features, enhanced safety measures, and a more powerful engine. This updated version will compete with popular SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor, and Volkswagen Taigun.

Additionally, the Sonet facelift model is expected to receive several exterior and interior updates as it continues to compete against rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite.

Conclusion

Kia India’s sales performance in June 2023 showcased a mixture of challenges and opportunities. While the company faced a YoY de-growth, the MoM improvement indicates a positive trend. The Carens and Sonet contributed significantly to overall sales, while the Seltos experienced a notable decline. Kia India’s strategy to launch updated versions of the Seltos and Sonet reflects its commitment to stimulating sales and remaining competitive in the Indian market.
