Kia Motors has officially launched its all-new EV9 electric SUV in India at a price of Rs 1.3 crore (ex-showroom). This premium electric SUV is available in the fully-loaded GT-Line trim and is being imported as a completely built unit (CBU). The EV9 now takes the place of Kia’s flagship offering in the Indian market, positioned above the EV6, marking the brand’s bold entry into the luxury electric SUV segment.
Exterior and Interior Design: Futuristic Styling with a Premium Touch
The Kia EV9 is a striking example of futuristic design paired with bold aesthetics. The front fascia is highlighted by vertically stacked LED headlamps with signature L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) and a sleek, closed-off grille. Integrated into the grille is Kia’s unique digital-pattern lighting, enhancing the visual appeal. At the rear, the EV9 sports vertical LED tail lamps and a clean, minimalist tailgate design complemented by a rear spoiler and a dual-tone bumper featuring a skid plate for a rugged touch.
In terms of dimensions, the EV9 is a large SUV, measuring 5,015mm in length, 1,980mm in width, and standing 1,780mm tall. Its substantial wheelbase of 3,100mm provides a commanding road presence and ample interior space.
Inside the cabin, the EV9 combines high-end materials with cutting-edge technology. A dual-screen setup dominates the dashboard, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system alongside a similarly sized digital instrument cluster. The interior also features a unique four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Kia logo, adding to the futuristic appeal. There’s generous storage space under the floating center console, and the cabin is accented with physical controls for key functions, placed conveniently below the central air conditioning vents. Kia offers a sophisticated dual-tone Brown and Black interior color scheme, creating a luxurious and spacious feel.
Premium Features and Safety: Loaded with Advanced Tech and ADAS
The Kia EV9 is designed to offer a top-tier luxury experience with an extensive list of features. It comes standard with a 6-seater layout, where the second row consists of captain’s chairs that offer electric adjustments, massage functions, and leg support. Passengers are further pampered by three-zone climate control, dual-electric sunroofs, a 14-speaker Meridian premium audio system, a head-up display (HUD), a digital rear-view mirror, and even vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing external devices to draw power from the car.
On the tech front, Kia has equipped the EV9 with the latest version of its Kia Connect connected-car technology, which includes over-the-air (OTA) updates, a digital key for added convenience, and comprehensive connectivity features.
Safety is a top priority in the EV9, which comes equipped with 10 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management (VSM), hill descent control, and all-wheel disc brakes. The SUV is also fitted with front, side, and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera for enhanced maneuverability in tight spaces.
In addition to these safety measures, the EV9 offers Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes features such as Forward Collision Warning, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, High Beam Assist, and more, ensuring a safer and more comfortable driving experience.
Powertrain, Battery, and Range: Impressive Performance and Fast Charging Capability
Powering the India-spec Kia EV9 is a robust 99.8kWh battery pack that drives dual electric motors, delivering an all-wheel-drive configuration. Combined, the motors generate a hefty 384hp and 700Nm of torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in just 5.3 seconds. The EV9 boasts an impressive ARAI-certified range of 561 kilometers on a single charge, making it suitable for long-distance travel without frequent stops for recharging.
Charging the EV9 is made convenient thanks to its compatibility with fast chargers. Using a 350kW DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 24 minutes, minimizing downtime and enhancing usability for long journeys.
Competition and Market Position: Taking on Luxury Electric SUVs
While the Kia EV9 doesn’t have any direct competitors in the Indian market, it is positioned against high-end luxury electric SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, EQE SUV, BMW iX, and the Audi Q8 e-tron. With its combination of premium features, spacious interior, cutting-edge technology, and long electric range, the EV9 presents a compelling alternative to these established players in the luxury EV segment.
Kia’s decision to bring the EV9 to India marks its commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and catering to a growing market of eco-conscious luxury car buyers. The EV9’s blend of performance, design, and advanced features makes it a strong contender in the premium electric SUV space, promising an elevated driving experience for those seeking sustainable luxury on the road.
