India’s EV Market Rebounds Strongly in October 2025
India’s electric vehicle (EV) market saw a sharp recovery in October 2025 after a temporary dip in September. According to Vahan data, 17,783 electric cars and SUVs were retailed across India last month — a 56% year-on-year (YoY) rise from 11,444 units in October 2024 and a 9% month-on-month (MoM) increase over September’s 16,354 units.
The surge came in tandem with the overall passenger vehicle (PV) market crossing a record 5,00,000 unit dispatches in a single month. This positive trend signals growing consumer confidence and expanding EV adoption post the rollout of GST 2.0 on September 22, 2025.
GST 2.0 Spurs EV Sales Momentum
The new GST regime has played a crucial role in narrowing the cost gap between internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and EVs. With the tax rate on small cars reduced from 28% to 18% and the compensation cess withdrawn, EVs—still taxed at just 5%—have become much more price competitive. This change has particularly benefitted entry-level and mass-market EVs.
October also marked the first full month of EV sales under GST 2.0 and the second month of operations for new entrants Tesla and Vinfast, both of which have started local deliveries.
