Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, has introduced the Armado, an Armoured Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV), specifically designed and developed for the Indian armed forces. With its modular design and extensive capabilities, the Armado offers versatility and enhanced protection for various operational roles.

Design and Operational Roles

The Armado is a highly adaptable vehicle that can be easily upgraded and configured to fulfill a wide range of operational requirements. It provides ballistic protection up to B7, Stanag Level II, making it suitable for counter-terrorist operations, patrolling high-intensity areas, special forces operations, and quick reaction teams. Additionally, it serves as a weapon carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, and border security vehicle, proving its versatility in diverse terrains, including open and desert environments.

Powertrain and Platform

Equipped with a robust 3.2-litre, turbocharged, direct-injection diesel engine, the Armado can run on NATO-grade diesel fuel. Generating 215hp and 500Nm of torque, the engine delivers power to all four wheels through a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle achieves a top speed of over 120kph and accelerates from 0 to 60kph in just 12 seconds. With a payload capacity of 1,000kg, the Armado combines power and agility for various missions.

Suspension and Tyres

The Armado features Bilstein independent suspension for all four corners, ensuring exceptional off-road capabilities and improved ride quality. It is equipped with 318/80 R17 tyres that are designed to run without air or punctures for up to 50km. Furthermore, the vehicle includes a centralised tyre inflation system, enhancing its performance in challenging terrains. The power steering system allows for smooth maneuverability, while the option for left-hand or right-hand drive configuration ensures operational flexibility.

Interior and Features

With a seating capacity of six passengers, expandable to eight, the Armado provides ample space for a team of personnel. It boasts essential features such as a public address (PA) system, GPS navigation, automatic grenade launcher, electric winch, and HF/UHF/VHF radio for effective communication. Additionally, the Armado incorporates a self-cleaning-type exhaust scavenging and air filtration system, specifically designed to operate efficiently in extremely dusty climates.
