Hyundai to Launch Made-in-India Compact EV in 2027

Hyundai to Launch Made-in-India Compact EV in 2027

Hyundai has confirmed that an all-new compact electric SUV, developed and manufactured entirely in India, will debut in 2027. The announcement was made during Hyundai’s Investor Day 2025, where the company revealed plans to expand its electric vehicle portfolio for emerging markets. This upcoming EV — expected to rival the Tata Punch EV — will be designed, engineered, and built in India, marking a significant milestone in Hyundai’s localisation strategy.

India-Focused EV Built on Global E-GMP (K) Platform

Internally codenamed HE1i, the new compact EV will be based on the E-GMP (K) architecture, a more affordable derivative of Hyundai’s global electric vehicle platform. This platform already underpins the Hyundai Inster, which is sold in international markets. Production of the India-spec model will take place at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu, alongside locally sourced battery packs from Exide Energy to keep costs competitive.

Two Battery Options with Impressive Range

The India-made Hyundai compact EV will offer two battery pack choices – Standard Range and Long Range – mirroring the Inster’s setup. While official specifications for the India model are yet to be announced, the international Inster features 42kWh and 49kWh batteries, delivering 300km and 355km (WLTP) of driving range respectively. Expect similar real-world performance for Indian conditions.

Feature-Rich Cabin with Connected Tech

Staying true to Hyundai’s feature-first approach, the compact EV will pack several premium features. Expect a dual 10.25-inch display setup, connected infotainment with OTA updates, and Level 2 ADAS capabilities – a first for its segment. Other likely inclusions are auto climate control, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, and fast-charging support.

Positioned to Rival Tata Punch EV

With its sub-4-metre dimensions, advanced EV platform, and modern tech, Hyundai’s upcoming compact electric SUV will directly compete with the Tata Punch EV and Citroen eC3. Given Hyundai’s focus on localisation and feature-rich products, this new model could become one of the most well-rounded electric SUVs in its class.

Launch Timeline and Expectations

Hyundai aims to bring the India-made compact EV to market by 2027, with production and testing expected to begin in 2026. Pricing will likely start around the Rs 10–12 lakh range (ex-showroom), making it a strong contender in India’s fast-growing affordable EV segment.

In Summary:
Hyundai’s upcoming made-in-India compact EV marks a bold step toward localised electric mobility. Built on the E-GMP (K) platform with locally sourced batteries, dual-range options, and ADAS technology, it promises to combine performance, practicality, and value — positioning Hyundai as a key player in India’s EV transformation.
