Hyundai has confirmed that it will launch the Creta EV in India in January 2025. During a recent media interaction, Hyundai Motor India CEO Tarun Garg stated, “We are leveraging all our learnings from the Ioniq 5 EV, among other experiences, as we prepare to launch our first high-volume EV in early January 2025.” Production of the Creta EV is set to begin by the end of 2024.
Hyundai Creta EV to Launch Ahead of Maruti eVX
Hyundai is rigorously testing the Creta EV both domestically and internationally. This model is one of three significant upcoming midsize electric SUVs, targeting competitors such as the soon-to-be-released Curvv EV. Maruti’s eVX, another anticipated electric SUV, will be launched later due to production delays.
The Creta EV will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Chennai plant, likely on the same production line as the conventional Creta. Sharing many components with the standard model, the Creta EV aims to keep costs manageable while featuring distinct design elements.
Power and Performance
The Creta EV will share its electric motor with the base version of the new-generation Kona Electric sold internationally. This motor, positioned at the front, is expected to deliver around 138hp and 255Nm of torque, powered by a 45kWh battery pack. This is slightly smaller compared to the MG ZS EV’s 50.3kWh battery and the upcoming Maruti eVX’s 48-60kWh options. The Creta EV will also feature a front-mounted charging port, similar to the Kona EV.
Unique Features of the Hyundai Creta EV
While maintaining some similarities with the regular Creta, the Creta EV will sport unique styling tweaks. It will have a closed-off grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels. Inside, the Creta EV will offer a distinct steering wheel and a redesigned center console. The drive selector will be located on the right side of the steering column, akin to the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5.
Following the Creta EV, Hyundai plans to introduce another mass-market compact EV by 2026. Although details about this second localized EV remain undisclosed, Garg emphasized that the experiences gained from the Ioniq and Kona Electric will contribute to the success of future models. Hyundai has committed to launching five EVs in India by 2030.
In addition to its focus on EVs, Hyundai is also considering the introduction of hybrid vehicles in the Indian market.
