The Hyundai Alcazar, a three-row SUV based on the popular Creta, competes with models like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, and Tata Safari. It is available with two engine options: a 160hp 1.5-liter turbo-petrol paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and a 116hp 1.5-liter diesel, offered with 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. For this evaluation, we tested the diesel-automatic variant to understand its real-world fuel efficiency.
Manufacturer’s Claims vs. Real-World Performance
Hyundai claims a fuel efficiency of 18.10kpl for the diesel-automatic Alcazar. To enhance mileage, the brand has omitted features like a panoramic sunroof and a spare tire (available only in the turbo-petrol variant) to reduce overall weight. During our tests, the Alcazar delivered 12.5kpl in city conditions and an impressive 16.3kpl on the highway.
Features Aimed at Fuel Efficiency
The Alcazar diesel-automatic is equipped with several features to optimize fuel consumption, especially in urban settings. Its auto engine stop/start system helps minimize idling fuel use during traffic stops, while Eco mode reduces throttle sensitivity and prompts early gear shifts to conserve fuel. The 6-speed automatic transmission is tuned to prioritize efficiency over performance in this mode.
How We Test Real-World Fuel Economy
Our real-world testing follows a meticulous process to ensure accuracy. Each test car is refueled to full capacity and driven along predefined city and highway routes near Navi Mumbai, adhering to average speeds typical of everyday driving. Tyre pressures are set according to manufacturer recommendations, and only one person is in the car during the test, with regular use of air conditioning, audio systems, and other electricals. To account for individual driving styles, periodic driver swaps are performed. After completing the test cycles, the tanks are refilled to calculate the exact fuel consumption.
This systematic approach offers insights into how the Hyundai Alcazar performs in real-world scenarios, providing valuable information for prospective buyers seeking an efficient yet practical diesel SUV.
