BMW Motorrad has officially pulled the covers off the new R 1300 R, its latest naked roadster offering. This machine is set to arrive in India soon and shares much of its core with the adventure-focused R 1300 GS, including the powerhouse boxer engine.
Performance & Powertrain
Under the tank, the R 1300 R packs the same 1,300cc boxer twin that drives the R 1300 GS. It produces 145hp at 7,750rpm and 149Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox and comes with a bi-directional quickshifter as standard, delivering power to the rear wheel via a shaft drive.
Chassis & Suspension
The new roadster shares its main frame with the GS, but features a redesigned subframe. Suspension duties are handled by a USD fork at the front and a Paralever EVO setup at the rear, both offering preload and damping adjustments as standard.
One of the standout features is the adjustable spring rate on the front fork, a first for a production motorcycle, according to BMW. While electronic suspension is not standard, it is available as part of the optional accessories catalogue.
Weight & Ergonomics
Tipping the scales at 239kg, the R 1300 R weighs the same as the outgoing R 1250 R and is just 2kg heavier than the R 1300 GS, despite its smaller 17-litre fuel tank compared to the GS’s 19-litre unit. Seat height is a manageable 785mm, making it quite accessible for most riders.
Brakes, Wheels & Electronics
Braking is handled by twin front discs with radially mounted 4-piston calipers, along with a single disc at the rear. The bike rolls on 17-inch wheels at both ends, staying true to its roadster identity.
In terms of electronics, BMW hasn’t held back. Standard equipment includes traction control, engine braking control, active cruise control with forward collision warning, and three riding modes – Eco, Rain, and Road. For those looking for even more performance, the optional Riding Modes Pro package adds Dynamic and Dynamic Pro settings.
Variants & India Launch
Globally, the R 1300 R will be available in four distinct variants, each with unique colour schemes and styling touches. BMW is expected to bring the motorcycle to Indian showrooms in the coming months. It will likely be priced below the R 1300 GS, which currently starts at ₹21.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
