BMW M5 Launched in India at ₹1.99 Crore: Boasts a 727hp Hybrid V8

BMW M5 Launched

BMW has introduced the seventh-generation M5 in India, priced at ₹1.99 crore (ex-showroom, before options). This latest iteration of the iconic performance sedan features a powerful plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain, making it the most potent M5 ever. However, the new model comes with a substantial price increase compared to its predecessor, which debuted at ₹1.62 crore in 2021.

Interestingly, the new M5 is priced just ₹4 lakh higher than the recently launched Mercedes-AMG C 63 (₹1.95 crore). Despite the marginal price difference, the M5 offers significantly more power and a longer electric-only range, highlighting its superior value in the performance segment.

Powertrain and Performance

The new M5 retains its signature 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, now paired with an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission—similar to the BMW XM SUV. The V8 delivers 585hp and 750Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds an impressive 199hp and 280Nm. Combined, the system generates 727hp and 1,000Nm, sent to all four wheels via BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Despite its added weight of approximately 2.5 tonnes (500kg heavier than its predecessor), the M5 sprints from 0-100kph in just 3.5 seconds. It offers an electronically limited top speed of 250kph, which can be increased to 305kph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

The 18.6kWh battery provides a WLTP-rated electric-only range of 69km, enabling speeds of up to 140kph in this mode. Charging options include AC charging up to 7.4kW. The M5 also features three driving modes—Hybrid, Electric, and eControl—with the latter designed for brake energy recuperation to maintain battery charge levels. Standard features include M compound brakes, with optional carbon ceramic brakes for enhanced stopping power.

Exterior Design

The new M5 distinguishes itself from the standard 5 Series with a more aggressive design, featuring sculpted bumpers, flared wheel arches, and a shorter wheelbase for a sportier stance.

The front fascia showcases a gloss-black grille with an integrated M5 logo, flanked by sharply designed air intakes and a prominent central air dam. The rear design is equally striking, featuring a spoiler, a two-section diffuser, and quad exhausts finished in gloss black. Vertical reflectors at the bumper’s edges emphasize the car’s width, while staggered wheels (20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear) enhance its dynamic stance. A carbon-fiber roof is standard, though buyers can opt for a panoramic sunroof, which adds 50kg to the car’s weight.

Interior and Features

Inside, the M5 retains the familiar layout of the standard 5 Series, with upgrades tailored for performance enthusiasts. The cabin features an M-specific flat-bottom steering wheel, illuminated M5 seats, and revised switchgear on the center console.

The technology suite includes a curved dual-screen setup with a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional amenities include a head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, and a wireless charging tray.

A New Benchmark for Performance Sedans

With its staggering power, cutting-edge hybrid technology, and refined luxury, the seventh-generation BMW M5 sets a new standard in the high-performance sedan segment. While the price sees a noticeable jump, the enhanced features and performance credentials justify its premium positioning.
