BMW Motorrad India has seemingly pulled the plug on its most affordable motorcycles, the G 310 R and G 310 GS. Dealership sources indicate that stocks have been exhausted across most outlets, and the G 310 R has already been delisted from BMW India’s website. This move leaves the BMW G 310 RR as the sole offering in the 310cc lineup.
Why Did BMW Discontinue the G 310 R & G 310 GS?
The BMW G 310 R, a sporty streetfighter, and the G 310 GS, a compact adventure tourer, shared the same 312cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 34PS at 9,500rpm and 28Nm at 7,500rpm. While these figures were respectable, the bikes struggled against an increasingly competitive market.
For instance, KTM’s latest 390 Duke offers significantly better performance—12PS and 11Nm more—along with modern tech like ride modes and cruise control. Despite being priced only slightly higher at Rs 2.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it delivers a far superior value proposition compared to the G 310 R, which last retailed at Rs 2.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
A similar story unfolds with the G 310 GS. While its rugged design and decent touring capabilities made it a fan favorite, it fell short against rivals like the KTM 390 Adventure and Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. The Himalayan 450, priced at Rs 32,000 less than the BMW, offers 6PS and 12Nm more, making it the more enticing option. Meanwhile, the KTM 390 Adventure (Rs 3.67 lakh, ex-showroom) packs superior performance, adjustable suspension, traction control, and better off-road abilities—outshining the G 310 GS in nearly every aspect.
The Future of BMW’s Entry-Level Lineup
BMW’s 310cc platform remained largely unchanged over the years, which likely contributed to its declining appeal. While the G 310 RR is still on sale, its limited features compared to its sibling, the TVS Apache RR 310, suggest that it too might not be around for long.
However, BMW Motorrad isn’t backing down from the entry-level segment just yet. The company has been developing a new 450cc parallel-twin platform, with the BMW F 450 GS concept already showcased at the Auto Expo. This signals an exciting future, as BMW is expected to introduce not just an adventure model but also a naked streetfighter based on this engine. That said, these models will take a few years to materialize.
While the discontinuation of the G 310 R and G 310 GS marks the end of an era, BMW’s upcoming 450cc motorcycles could be a game-changer, offering more power, better features, and a stronger competitive edge in the premium entry-level segment.
